Aces of Hearts: Abena & Ayo's Akan–Yoruba Wedding
He asked the question in the Moroccan Sahara — and answered it with a wedding that brought Akan and Yoruba together as one. This is Abena & Ayo.
A Question in the Sahara
Some proposals happen at home. Ayo took his all the way to the Moroccan Sahara — golden dunes, an open sky, and a question that would carry two families across an ocean. Abena said yes, and what began in the desert became a promise the two of them tagged, simply, #acesofhearts25.
Two Heritages, One Ceremony
Abena is Akan. Ayo is Yoruba. Rather than choose between them, they built a day that honoured both — Ghana and Nigeria sharing the same floor, the same prayers, the same dance. It is one of our favourite kinds of wedding to document: two cultures that don't compete but complete, each one making the other brighter.
The Traditional
The traditional celebration was all colour and ceremony — kente and aso-oke, gold against deep green, elders and family moving through the rites that make a marriage real long before any register is signed. There were the gifts and the greetings, the laughter and the spray, and that particular joy that fills a room when two heritages recognise each other as kin.
The White Wedding
Then came the white wedding, at The Estate at Florentine Gardens — Abena in a gown that seemed to hold the light, Ayo waiting at the end of the aisle the way grooms do when they already know. Vows, rings, the first kiss as husband and wife, and petals in the air as they were announced for the very first time.
The Celebration
What followed was pure celebration — Banq on Parq glowing, the floor never empty, family pulled in from both sides of the family tree. The kind of night that runs long because nobody wants it to end, captured in stills and in film so the two of them can step back into it whenever they like.
A Love Worth the Distance
From a desert proposal to a dance floor that held two nations, Abena and Ayo never did anything by halves. Aces of hearts, indeed.
